How to Play Gomoku

  1. Black and White take turns placing stones on board intersections.
  2. The first player to form an unbroken line of five stones wins.
  3. Lines count horizontally, vertically and diagonally.
  4. You play Black and move first; the AI responds.

Tips & Strategy

  • An open three (three in a row with both ends free) must be answered immediately.
  • Attack by building two threats at once — a 'double three' or 'four-three' is usually decisive.
  • Don't chase the AI's stones around the board; develop your own shape near the centre.

Gomoku — Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Gomoku and Go?

Only the board. Go is about surrounding territory; Gomoku is simply the race to put five stones in a row.

Does five-in-a-row count if the line is longer?

Yes — in this freestyle version an overline of six or more also wins.

How does the computer decide its moves?

It scores every empty point for both attack and defence — open threes, fours and broken patterns — and takes the hottest point on the board.
