How to Play Gomoku
- Black and White take turns placing stones on board intersections.
- The first player to form an unbroken line of five stones wins.
- Lines count horizontally, vertically and diagonally.
- You play Black and move first; the AI responds.
Tips & Strategy
- An open three (three in a row with both ends free) must be answered immediately.
- Attack by building two threats at once — a 'double three' or 'four-three' is usually decisive.
- Don't chase the AI's stones around the board; develop your own shape near the centre.
Gomoku — Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between Gomoku and Go?
Only the board. Go is about surrounding territory; Gomoku is simply the race to put five stones in a row.
Does five-in-a-row count if the line is longer?
Yes — in this freestyle version an overline of six or more also wins.
How does the computer decide its moves?
It scores every empty point for both attack and defence — open threes, fours and broken patterns — and takes the hottest point on the board.
