Minecraft Mobs
All 78 mobs — pick one for its health, spawn locations, drops and behavior.
Passive
The Allay is a friendly flying mob that serves as an automated item collector. When given an item, it searches nearby areas for matching items and returns them to the player or a linked note block. Allays can be duplicated (not bred) by feeding them an amethyst shard while they are dancing after hearing a note block play.
Added in Java Edition 1.20.5 (Armored Paws update), the Armadillo is a passive mob found in savanna and badlands biomes. It periodically sheds Armadillo Scutes, which are used to craft Wolf Armor — the only armor wearable by tamed wolves. Its defensive roll behavior makes it a unique and charming addition to the game.
Axolotls are aquatic passive mobs native to lush caves that act as allies against underwater threats. They come in five color variants, with blue being extremely rare and obtainable only through breeding. Carrying an axolotl in a bucket and releasing it during underwater combat grants the player Regeneration and removes Mining Fatigue.
Bats are small ambient passive mobs found only underground in dark caves. They serve a purely atmospheric purpose, adding to the eerie feel of caves. Bats drop nothing on death and have no interaction with players beyond their ambient sounds.
Cats are passive mobs that spawn in villages and can be tamed with raw fish. They come in 11 different coat patterns. Cats deter creepers and phantoms from approaching, making a tamed cat a valuable companion. Tamed cats occasionally bring the player gifts such as rabbits' feet or phantom membranes upon waking.
Chickens are small passive mobs found in most grassy Overworld biomes. They are a source of feathers, raw chicken, and eggs, with eggs having a 1-in-8 chance to spawn a chick when thrown. Chickens take no fall damage thanks to their slow-falling wing-flap ability.
Cod are common passive fish mobs found in most ocean biomes. They swim in schools and serve as a reliable early-game food source. Cod can be caught by fishing or scooped into a water bucket to transport them.
The cow is one of the most versatile passive mobs, providing beef, leather, and milk. It wanders in most grassy Overworld biomes and is frequently encountered early in survival gameplay. Cows can be bred with wheat, making them a reliable renewable resource.
Donkeys are passive rideable mobs with the unique ability to carry a chest, making them useful mobile storage. They are slower than horses but invaluable for transporting items across long distances. Breeding a donkey with a horse produces a mule.
Frogs are passive mobs that come in three color variants determined by the biome temperature where their tadpole stage was completed. They uniquely produce Frogslight blocks by eating small magma cubes, with each frog variant producing a different colored Froglight. Frogs lay frogspawn in water after being bred with Slimeballs.
Ghastlings are baby happy ghasts introduced in Java Edition 1.21.6, born from hydrated Dried Ghast blocks recovered from the Soul Sand Valley. They are entirely docile and represent the early stage of taming a Happy Ghast mount. Unlike hostile Ghasts, Ghastlings are peaceful companions that can be nurtured with snowballs to speed their maturation.
Glow squids are bioluminescent variants of the regular squid found in dark underwater cave environments. They drop glow ink sacs used to make glowing text on signs and glow item frames. They are passive and will not retaliate against attackers.
Horses are rideable passive mobs that spawn in plains and savannas. Each horse has unique stats for speed, jump height, and health. Once tamed and saddled, they become the fastest land transport in the game and can wear horse armor for protection.
Mooshrooms are mushroom-covered cow variants exclusive to the rare Mushroom Fields biome. They provide both milk and an infinite supply of Mushroom Stew when milked with a bowl. A lightning strike can convert a Red Mooshroom into the rare Brown Mooshroom variant, which can be milked for various Suspicious Stew effects.
Mules are hybrid mobs created by breeding a horse and a donkey and do not spawn naturally in the world. They combine the chest-carrying ability of donkeys with slightly better movement than donkeys. Mules are sterile and cannot breed.
Ocelots are wild jungle cats that cannot be fully tamed but can be made to trust the player by carefully feeding them raw fish. Like cats, they repel creepers and phantoms. They do not drop any items on death and are one of the rarer passive mobs due to jungle rarity.
Parrots are colorful passive mobs found exclusively in jungles and available in five color variants. They can be tamed with seeds and will perch on the player's shoulder. A unique feature is their ability to mimic the sounds of nearby hostile mobs, effectively acting as an alarm system.
Pigs are common passive mobs found in most grassy Overworld biomes. They are a primary early-game food source and can be ridden when saddled and controlled with a carrot on a stick. A lightning strike transforms a pig into a Zombified Piglin.
Rabbits are small and skittish passive mobs that come in several color variants matching their biome. They are a source of rabbit hide (used to craft leather) and rabbit's foot (used in brewing). Rabbits flee rapidly when approached and are difficult to catch.
Salmon are passive fish found in cold rivers and oceans. They are slightly larger and hardier than cod and restore more hunger when eaten as cooked salmon. Like all fish, they can be scooped into a bucket to carry them to new locations.
Sheep are passive mobs that spawn in a variety of natural wool colors including white, grey, black, brown, and rare pink. They are the primary source of wool for crafting beds and decorative blocks. Shearing is more efficient than killing, as it yields more wool and can be repeated.
The Sniffer is a large prehistoric passive mob and the winner of Minecraft Live 2022's mob vote. It is revived from an egg found in ancient ocean ruins and sniffs out extinct plant seeds from the ground. Sniffers are the source of Torchflower and Pitcher Plant seeds, the only way to obtain these decorative plants.
Snow Golems are player-built utility mobs that pelt nearby hostiles with snowballs. They are primarily used to distract enemies or farm snowballs rather than deal meaningful damage. They melt rapidly in hot biomes and cannot survive in the Nether or Jungle.
Squids are common passive aquatic mobs found in rivers and oceans. They are the primary source of ink sacs, which are used for black dye and book-and-quill writing. Squids are harmless and flee when attacked by squirting ink clouds.
Striders are the only passive mob native to the Nether and the only rideable mob that can safely traverse lava. They walk on lava seas and can be saddled and directed with a Warped Fungus on a Stick, making them essential for Nether navigation. They become cold and sluggish outside of lava, suffering damage.
Tadpoles are the juvenile form of frogs, hatching from frogspawn laid in water. They are tiny, fragile aquatic mobs that can be transported in buckets to different biomes, thereby influencing which frog color variant they will grow into. They are hunted by axolotls.
Tropical fish are vibrant passive mobs with an enormous variety of color and shape combinations. They appear in warm ocean biomes and lush cave waters. While they restore very little hunger, they are used to feed axolotls and are popular for aquarium displays.
Turtles are sturdy passive mobs with the highest health of any passive mob in the game. They always return to the beach where they hatched to lay eggs, and protecting turtle eggs from being trampled is a player challenge. Adult turtles drop Seagrass, but the most valuable resource — the Turtle Scute — is dropped only when a baby turtle grows to adulthood. Five scutes can craft a Turtle Helmet.
Villagers are passive mobs that inhabit villages and engage in professions like farmer, blacksmith, librarian, and cleric. They offer trades that can provide valuable items and enchanted books in exchange for emeralds. Protecting villagers from raids and zombie sieges is a key mid-game challenge.
The Wandering Trader is a roaming merchant who appears near players with unique and often hard-to-find trade goods such as rare plants, dyes, and blocks. Their trades do not restock and they despawn after a set time. Two leashed Trader Llamas accompany them and spit at those who attack the trader.
Neutral
Bees are small flying neutral mobs that live in bee nests and beehives. They collect pollen from flowers to produce honey, filling their hive over time. Angering a bee causes it to sting once, after which it dies — making them a one-shot neutral threat.
Dolphins are social neutral mobs that swim in pods throughout ocean biomes. They interact positively with players by guiding them to underwater structures when fed fish. Unlike most aquatic mobs, dolphins are not immune to drowning and must regularly surface for air.
Endermen are tall, lanky neutral mobs with the unusual ability to teleport and pick up blocks. They become aggressive when a player makes direct eye contact with their face — a unique aggro trigger in Minecraft. Looking at them through a carved pumpkin worn as a helmet prevents aggression.
Foxes are cunning neutral mobs that hunt small animals at night and sleep during the day. They spawn holding items (like emeralds or rabbit hides) and will pick up nearby dropped items. A fox that trusts the player (bred from two wild foxes) will attack mobs that harm the player.
Goats are nimble neutral mobs that inhabit the high mountain peaks of the Overworld. They are notable for their powerful ramming attack and exceptional jumping ability. A rare screaming variant is significantly more aggressive and drops exclusive horn variants.
Iron Golems are large, powerful utility mobs that defend villages from threats. They are one of the tankiest mobs in the Overworld with 100 HP. Players can construct their own Iron Golems to serve as guardians.
Llamas are tameable pack animals found in mountainous and savanna biomes. They travel in herds and can be formed into caravans by leashing the lead llama. Their spit attack automatically targets untamed wolves that come too close.
Pandas are rare neutral mobs found in jungle biomes that come in several personality variants including lazy, playful, worried, aggressive, and weak. They are among the rarer overworld mobs and require a bamboo jungle to breed successfully. Each personality type exhibits distinct animations and behaviors.
Piglins are gold-obsessed humanoid mobs native to the Nether. They can be traded with using gold ingots, offering a randomized assortment of Nether-useful items including ender pearls, fire resistance potions, and crying obsidian. A single piece of gold armor keeps them friendly.
Polar bears are large neutral mobs exclusive to icy biomes. Adults become aggressively protective when cubs are nearby, making them especially dangerous in groups. They are one of the stronger neutral Overworld mobs at 30 HP.
Pufferfish are small neutral aquatic mobs found in warm oceans. They puff up defensively when approached, damaging and poisoning anything that touches them in their inflated state. Their item form is used in brewing the Potion of Water Breathing.
Spiders are common mobs that shift between neutral and hostile states based on light level. They are unique in their ability to scale any vertical surface and fit through 1-block-tall gaps. Spider jockeys — spiders ridden by skeletons — can occasionally spawn as a dangerous combined enemy.
Trader Llamas are a variant of the standard llama that always accompany Wandering Traders as pack animals. They behave identically to regular llamas in combat, defending themselves and their trader with spit. If the Wandering Trader is killed, its llamas may be tamed and kept by the player.
Wolves are tameable neutral mobs found in forested and snowy biomes. They are tamed by feeding them bones and can be bred with meat. Tamed wolves have significantly more health than their wild counterparts and will fight for their owner.
Zombified Piglins are undead variants of Piglins that wander the Nether in large groups. They are normally passive but become a pack threat when any single one is provoked, as nearby individuals all aggro simultaneously. As of Java 1.21.5, XP drops are restricted to direct player kills even during angered states.
Hostile
Blazes are flaming, floating Nether mobs found exclusively in Nether Fortresses. They are a critical mob for progression, as blaze rods are required to craft Eyes of Ender and brew potions. They are immune to fire and lava but are vulnerable to snowballs and water.
The Bogged is a new skeletal mob introduced in Java 1.21 (Tricky Trials), identifiable by the mushrooms and moss growing on its bones. It inhabits swamps and appears in Trial Chambers, firing poison-tipped arrows that can quickly drain health. Despite its threatening arrows, it is actually weaker than a standard skeleton.
The Breeze is a wind-elemental mob introduced in Java 1.21 that exclusively inhabits Trial Chambers. It is a highly mobile combatant that uses ranged Wind Charges to reposition players and trigger environmental hazards. Breeze Rods from its drops are used to craft Wind Charges and the powerful Mace weapon.
Cave Spiders are smaller, venomous variants of the regular spider found only in mineshafts near their spawners. Their Poison attack makes them disproportionately dangerous for their health pool, especially in groups. The surrounding cobwebs in mineshafts further complicate encounters by slowing player movement.
The Creeper is one of Minecraft's most iconic mobs, famous for its silent approach and devastating explosion. It does not burn in daylight, making it a constant threat. Its explosion can destroy terrain and structures, making it uniquely destructive among common hostile mobs.
Drowned are aquatic undead mobs that spawn in oceans and rivers, or result from zombies drowning. They are the primary source of tridents, one of the rarest weapons in the game. Their underwater speed makes them dangerous in their natural habitat.
Elder Guardians are the mini-boss variants of the Guardian that inhabit and protect Ocean Monuments. Their Mining Fatigue III curse makes it nearly impossible to break monument blocks without milk, forcing players to plan carefully. Defeating all three is required to fully loot the monument.
Endermites are the smallest hostile mob in the game, appearing as tiny purple arthropods with a connection to the End dimension. They are rarely encountered as they only appear via Ender Pearl throws. Endermen will actively hunt and attack any Endermite they detect.
Evokers are spell-casting Illager wizards and are among the most dangerous Overworld mobs due to their ability to summon Vexes and their devastating fang attacks. They are the only natural source of the Totem of Undying, making them crucial to farm for survival-mode players. Their armor-piercing fangs ignore armor protection.
Ghasts are enormous, jellyfish-like mobs that float through the Nether emitting mournful cries. Despite having very low health, their fireball explosions are extremely destructive to terrain and players. They are one of the few mobs whose projectiles can be reflected back at them.
Guardians are aquatic hostile mobs that defend Ocean Monuments with laser attacks. They are the regular guard mob of ocean monuments alongside the Elder Guardian. Their laser requires time to charge, giving players a brief window to hide or attack before taking damage.
Hoglins are large boar-like mobs native to the Crimson Forest that serve as the primary meat source in the Nether. They are one of the few Nether mobs that can be bred (using Crimson Fungi) and farmed for food. If brought to the Overworld, they quickly transform into the undead and uncontrollable Zoglin.
Husks are the desert-dwelling variant of the zombie, adapted to survive in sunlight. Their attacks inflict Hunger, making them more threatening on extended encounters. They are commonly found patrolling desert biomes day and night.
Magma Cubes are the Nether counterparts of Slimes, bouncing aggressively through lava and fire without taking damage. They split into smaller versions on death, potentially overwhelming unprepared players. Small Magma Cubes are the primary renewable source of Magma Cream, essential for crafting fire resistance potions.
Phantoms are undead flying mobs that haunt players who refuse to sleep. They swoop down in coordinated attacks, making them dangerous in large numbers. Their membranes are one of the few ways to repair the Elytra, making them an important mob to farm eventually.
Piglin Brutes are the elite guards of Bastion Remnants, distinguishable by their black leather straps and fierce aggression. They are significantly stronger than regular Piglins and cannot be pacified with gold, making Bastion raids a true combat challenge. They are non-renewable since they only spawn once per structure generation.
Pillagers are the most common Illager-type mob, serving as crossbow-wielding raiders. They inhabit outposts and lead patrol groups across the Overworld. Killing their captain triggers a village raid, initiating one of the game's most challenging survival events.
Ravagers are massive beast mobs that serve as living battering rams for Illager raids. Their charge attack can send players flying and devastates village crops and defenses. Despite their size they are relatively fast and difficult to kite, making raids featuring them especially intense.
Shulkers are shell-armored mobs that blend into the purple blocks of End Cities. Their homing bullets deal no direct damage but apply Levitation, which can be lethal if the player floats too high above the void. Shulker Shells are essential for crafting Shulker Boxes, the game's only portable inventory containers.
Silverfish are small, fast insectoid mobs that lurk inside infested stone blocks in strongholds and mountain biomes. Attacking one often triggers a swarm as nearby silverfish burst from the walls. Their ability to call reinforcements makes even a single silverfish potentially dangerous.
Skeletons are ranged undead archers that are among the most common hostile mobs. They are accurate shooters and will circle players to maintain optimal firing distance. They are particularly dangerous in open areas where players cannot close the gap.
Slimes are bouncy cube-shaped mobs that split into progressively smaller versions when killed. Only the smallest size actually deals damage, though large slimes can still push players. Slimeballs are a valuable crafting ingredient for pistons, leads, and sticky pistons.
Strays are the cold-biome variant of the skeleton, distinguished by their tattered appearance and icy-blue colouration. Their slowing arrows make escaping them significantly more difficult, especially in open snowy terrain. They replace skeleton spawns in frozen biomes.
Vexes are tiny spectral creatures summoned by Evokers to overwhelm players. Their ability to phase through solid blocks makes them extremely difficult to deal with in enclosed spaces. They are among the few mobs capable of flying through terrain.
Vindicators are axe-wielding Illagers found in Woodland Mansions and raids. They deal extremely high melee damage, making them one of the most dangerous common Overworld mobs. Their aggressive charge makes them a serious threat even to well-armored players.
The Warden is the strongest hostile mob in Minecraft, introduced in The Wild Update and residing in the Deep Dark. It is intentionally designed to be avoided rather than fought, serving as a living alarm system for Ancient City structures. With the most HP of any non-boss mob and armor-bypassing attacks, a direct confrontation is nearly always fatal without exceptional gear.
Witches are ranged potion-throwers that are both offensively and defensively dangerous. They are the only mob that naturally uses potions to heal themselves, making prolonged fights attrition-based. They are found in swamp huts and are notable participants in raids.
Wither Skeletons are tall, charred skeletal warriors that roam Nether Fortresses wielding stone swords. They are the primary reason players raid Nether Fortresses, as their skulls are required to summon the Wither boss. Their Wither status effect makes encounters particularly dangerous, as the black-heart drain can be difficult to monitor.
Zoglins are the zombified form of Hoglins, created when a Hoglin is brought outside the Nether. Unlike Hoglins, Zoglins are pure undead hostiles that attack everything indiscriminately and cannot be calmed. They retain the Hoglin's powerful tusk attack but gain undead properties including immunity to being bred or bartered with.
Zombies are the classic undead mob that roam the night attacking any nearby players and villagers. They are slow but relentless, and dangerous in groups. On Hard difficulty, they can break down wooden doors.
Zombie Villagers retain the appearance of their former villager profession and are the only hostile mob that can be permanently cured and turned into a friendly NPC. Curing them results in significant trading discounts, making them highly valuable to players. They spawn in zombie villages and igloo basements.
Boss
The Ender Dragon is the primary boss of Minecraft and the final challenge of the End dimension. Defeating it for the first time is considered the formal completion of the base game, unlocking the End Poem. Players must strategically destroy all End Crystals on the obsidian pillars before they can deal sustained damage to the dragon.
The Wither is a powerful player-summoned boss that requires 3 Wither Skeleton Skulls to create — making preparation as difficult as the fight itself. It is the only source of Nether Stars, which are required to craft Beacons. The Wither's ability to destroy most blocks and attack multiple targets makes it one of the most destructive forces in the game.
